NEW YORK (Variety) - After he completes a pair of sequels to the futuristic hit "The Matrix," Keanu Reeves is looking to go retro, in the form of "Billy Jack."

Tom Laughlin, who wrote, directed and starred in the original 1971 counterculture hit, is in talks with Danny DeVito's Jersey Films and Reeves' management firm 3 Arts to mount a remake of the film.

A tough, spiritual Vietnam veteran who's half-Native American, Billy Jack challenged the establishment and championed a group of runaway teens as well as the environment in an Arizona town. A man of few words, he was quick with fists and feet.

The project is expected to be shopped to studios shortly, and Laughlin also will play a critical role in the production. The film rights are controlled by Laughlin, who over the years has received numerous remake overtures for a film whose cost-to-gross ratio made it wildly profitable.

It is the first project Reeves has targeted as a potential star vehicle since he immersed himself in the yearlong shoot of "The Matrix Reloaded" and "The Matrix Revolutions," the back-to-back sequels to the hit 1999 film.

Keanu Gives Up Matrix Money

It may come as no surprise that Keanu Reeves, who opts to intersperse mega-hits like Speed with quirkier art-house fare like Little Buddha, isn't exactly motivated by money. The actor has even signed away a sizeable back-end deal for two Matrix sequels, the Wall Street Journal reported today in a profile of Reeves' erratic Hollywood career.

According to the paper, Reeves handed over his valuable profit-sharing points to the franchise's special-effects and costume-design team. Whoa, dude!

"He felt that they were the ones who made the movie and that they should participate," an unnamed movie executive tells the Journal.

And it's not the first time that Reeves has shared his movie spoils. On The Devil's Advocate, Reeves shaved his salary by a few million dollars so that producers could afford Al Pacino, and he did the same thing on The Replacements to be able to work with Gene Hackman, according to the Journal.

But don't cry for Reeves' bank account: the actor was paid $10 million upfront for The Matrix and ended up earning $35 million from back-end deals when the film became a hit.

If it were up to studio execs - and doubtless, most moviegoers - Reeves would be cast only in profitable, surefire action movies like The Matrix and Speed. Instead, says the Journal, Warner Bros. compromises with the actor, greenlighting movies like Sweet November that no one particularly wants to see to secure Reeves' services for the big movies.

Still, the actor's quest for diverse roles paid off recently when he won unexpected praise for his turn as a redneck wife beater in the little-seen The Gift.

To help prime the pump for the (now delayed until 2003) release of the sequel, Warner will be releasing The Matrix Revisited on 11/20 on DVD. Not a reissue of the existing DVD, this new making-of explores the film and the ensuing phenomenon, and the film is not included on this release. (Sort of like a Matrix: Ultimate Edition spread over two separate releases?) The disc includes "What is to Come?" behind-the-scenes featurette on Matrix Reloaded (aka Matrix 2), the "What is Animatrix?" anime preview, "The True Followers" interviews with hardcore Matrix fans, "The Dance of the Master" fight choreography featurette with Wu Ping, two scene studies of "The Bathroom Fight:" and "Wet Wall," the "But Wait, There's More" music montage with never before seen footage and four "hidden" easter eggs "Chase in the Alley," "The Woman in Red," "Gun Training" and the audio only "Juke Box." For DVD-ROM enabled users, you'll also find "What is the Matrix.com" preview of new Matrix website. Retail for this puppy is $19.95.

HOLLYWOOD (Variety) - Warner Bros. will bow "Matrix Reloaded" in a simultaneous domestic and foreign wide release pegged for May 2003, sources said.

Industry observers had expected a fourth-quarter 2002 roll-out of the sequel to 1999's Keanu Reeves blockbuster "The Matrix.'" But Warner Bros. distribution president Dan Fellman said, "We never have had it scheduled."

Warner Bros. won't officially confirm the tentative 2003 plans, with Fellman noting that shooting has yet to start although early effects work is going well. "We are right on schedule with the film," he said.

[Editor's Note: Fellman got it wrong; much shooting has already been completed on California locations. Australia and possibly Chicago location shoots are upcoming]

Recently, diners at the popular La Vecchia Cucina Restaurant in Santa Monica got an unexpected show when Keanu Reeves got up and started showing tae kwon do kicks to a delighted little girl about 7 or 8. He was dining with her and her beautiful blonde mother, identified as Amanda de Cadenet and her daughter, Atlanta.

The cast and crew of the Matrix sequel conducted a Buddhist ceremony in front of the California State Building in Oakland on their first day of filming Monday. Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss and Laurence Fishburne were among those chanting prayers as they rolled and lit rice paper to throw into a pyre. They all put their hands on a large knife and plunged it through a barbecued pig. All of this was meant to bring them luck on the shoot, which continues in the East Bay for 12 weeks before relocating in Australia. With grosses of almost $400 million on the first Matrix, the ceremony may have been superfluous, but at least they got a hearty lunch out of it.

Keanu looked great (of course!) last night at the Golden Globes. He was wearing a Tux by Dolce & Gabbana. I couldn't tell who his "date" was, but she was tall with dark hair and appeared (to me) to be his sister Karina.

Update on Keanu's foot: I'm told that Keanu sprained his foot while training for The Matrix sequels. His trainer took him to the hospital. The boot is now off.

Now, as to the rumors that Keanu was seen coming out of a liquor store drunk -- HOGWASH! 'Nuf said!

The February 2001 issue of Vanity Fair has started to appear on newsstands. Keanu is on the cover, there are more pictures inside (all by Mario Testino) and there is a very nice interview. Buy it!

Dateline: January 6, 2001

It seems that Keanu has hurt his foot, judging by these pix, which appear to be recent (which I'm not sure of at this point). Doesn't look to be broken though. I wonder if this occurred while training for The Matrix films?

Foot1   Foot2

Dateline: January 5, 2001

Rumors are once again flying around that Keanu is going to marry Amanda De Cadenet (former wife of Duran Duran’s John
Taylor, by whom she has a daughter Atlanta, seven). Although I do not know the truth of this matter, I would say it is highly unlikely. I do know that they have never been engaged, and I'm pretty sure they are nothing more than friends. It has long been suspected that Amanda herself is keeping this rumor alive (for years now!) for her own publicity.

Presently, Keanu's representatives are denying that there are any marriage plans. I do think that if Keanu ever decides to marry, he will be proud of the fact and will officially announce it.

Dateline: January 1, 2001

We hear that Keanu is the cover story of the February 2001 issue of Vanity Fair. It hits newsstands about January 15th in the USA.

The Watcher is being released to DVD and VHS on 2/20/2001. The VHS will be at a "for rental only" price, unfortunately.
